THE FINAL PART OF THE CONQUEST

Following up with the previous episode, Musa’s son, Abdulaziz was on a campaign in Murcia. According to a record, the chief of Murcia, Theodimir played a trick on the Muslims when he found out that they are irresistible. He came to the army of Abdulaziz in disguise after parading his soldiers and women whom he has disguised as soldiers on the walls of the city, he told Abdulaziz that he wanted peace to reign and does not want bloodshed and also that he can solve the issue without a war.

For Abdulaziz, upon seeing a large amount of people on the walls of the city whom he thought were soldiers, he gave in for peace to avoid a great bloodshed and a treaty were signed between he and Theodimir on April 713A.D were Abdulaziz promised safety of the city and its inhabitant. Thus, he managed to prevent a devastating defeat from the Muslims although the Muslims .

By the time Musa bn Nusair was preparing to leave for Damascus with Tariq, he left Abdulaziz as the governor-general of the newly conquered land, another son of his,Abdullah over Africa and one other son,Abdulmalik over al-maghrib(Morocco). He left for Damascus on 714A.D with loads of booty and 30,000 war prisoners. It was said that Musa ibn Nusair and Tariq ibn Ziyad entered Damascus with forty princes and noblemen of the Visigoth royal family. He received the order to arrive early because the then Caliph Walid I was about to die.

One of the reasons for the quick summon of Musa to Damascus was because the caliph wanted to learn about their conquest directly from them and probably to prevent Musa from gaining enough power to declare his independence from the Umayyads. The crown prince, Suleiman issued a contrary order to him to delay his arrival in order to mark the beginning of his reign with the entry of the victorious army but Musa chose the former and entered the city 40 days before the death of the caliph in 715A.D. when Suleiman became the caliph, he stripped both Musa and Tariq of their titles and condemned them to live in obscurity and poverty for the rest of their life.
