FACTORS LEADING TO THE EASY CONQUEST OF SPAIN AND PRIVILEGES GIVEN TO THE SUPPORTERS

The Muslims were able to complete the conquest within a very short period because of several reasons,some of them are;
1. The Muslims of the earlier generations are people who possess strong faith. They desire the afterlife than the present and they exhibited a great deal of tenacity, confidence and enterprising spirit while dealing with their enemy.
2. The sons of King Witiza from whom Roderick usurped the throne harbored severe hatred for Roderick, fortunately enough; they were made the commander of the left and right wing of Roderick’s army in the battle against Tariq bn Ziyad. They made secret plan with Tariq and betrayed Roderick in order to regain their father’s possession.
3. Roderick made a very grave mistake which costed him the war by taking out almost his whole army with him to fight Tariq without leaving any reserve for defense.
4. The Jews in Spain saw the Muslims as saviors since they were usually being persecuted and maltreated by the Gothic Christians, so they supported the Muslims from the inside in a number of confrontations the Muslims had with the enemies.
After the conflict, security for the possession of those who aided the Muslims were put in place; Almand, who was the eldest of king witiza’s sons was given a thousand villages in western Spain and he settled in Seville. Artebas, who was the second son, was also given a thousand villages and he settled in Cordova. The third son, Rumelu was assigned an estate and he settled in Toledo,count Julian was confirmed as the governor of Ceuta and witiza’s brother, bishop Oppas was appointed the governor of Toledo.
